What happens when nothing happens?
A film installation by Robert Schabus
filmed in the context of the Long Night of Research
at the University of Klagenfurt in cooperation with the University Cultural Center UNIKUM
The visitors are invited to stand individually in front of the film camera and to look directly into the camera for a while. The resulting "stills" are sequenced and displayed as a loop.
It's harder than you would expect to stand (still) in front of a film camera, looking into the lens without moving. In this situation, the person is exposed to the camera. There is no activity or language to hold on to.
Conversely, as a viewer of such a "still image", one immediately senses that it is not a photograph. The subtle movements, the look, the uncertainty, the personality.
