Horst Dieter Sihler was one of the pioneers who initiated the renewal of the Austrian film scene. At that time, he had already been for many years one of the most important film critics at European film festivals, especially in Eastern Europe. He wrote for FAZ, Weltwoche, Basler Zeitung, Tagesspiegel Berlin, Kölner Stadtanzeiger, Tagesanzeiger Zürich and others. Furthermore, he was essential for Austria’s reception of film in the 70s and 80s. In 1977 he realized the 1st Austrian Film Festival of Austrian film in Velden. At about the same time he started touring with a mobile cinema until he ended up organizing the program of the art house cinema „Volkskino" in Klagenfurt.
In "Die Bougainvillea und das Kino" Horst Dieter Sihler and colleagues from art house cinemas in Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz and Graz talk about the struggling and striving for a new kind of film and cinema culture, about their very personal approach to cinema and about the important role of "Programmkinos" (art house/repertory cinemas) for the Austrian film.
