“We are the city's visiting card,” says Melanie Zechner as she and her team tend to Klagenfurt's floral and plant splendor. She is one of 150 employees in the City Garden department, who, under the leadership of Heinz Blechl, work with great dedication all year round to make the Carinthian capital bloom.
The filmmaker Robert Schabus, who himself lives in Klagenfurt, accompanies the city gardeners through all the seasons and reveals their many tasks and challenges; from spring cleaning to winter maintenance, from checking the 15,000 or so trees to mowing and clearing work and maintaining the fountains. Biodiversity and climate change adaptation are just as much a topic as the important social function of urban green and recreational areas. The quality of life in a city depends to a large extent on its public open spaces - and on those who look after them. All year round, the city gardeners shape Klagenfurt's cityscape and influence the way we all live together with their work.
An atmospheric film in which we get to know both the city and its people and learn what their work means for them and for Klagenfurt.
